Strong words from Marcus Spears as he calls LSU is the “Cleveland Browns of college football as far as quarterbacks.”

Since 2005, the LSU tigers have signed 20 quarterbacks, but only 4 have completed their careers at LSU. The last quarterback from LSU to be drafted in one of the first five rounds was in 2007. These are surprising numbers coming from one of the top programs in the SEC. How can a football program this distinguished not have the quarterback position figured out?

Todd McShay says it’s because of the development. Almost none of these quarterbacks have been successful past college. The LSU coaches have to figure out what will work for this team and these players.  Marcus Spears says the turnover of coaches plays a factor into this. LSU is on their third offensive coordinator in three years. Switching coaches that often can be hard for teams to develop rhythms and patterns because they are having to learn new ideas and adapt each year.

This year, LSU has two quarterbacks competing for the starting position, Joe Burrow and Miles Brennan. Burrow is a grad transfer from Ohio State and seems to be the front runner. Head coach Ed Orgeron says he feels confident in the team and has seem lots of spirit in these players recently. LSU is going to let those quarterbacks play it out and will wait to establish the starter.  The Tigers have a tough schedule this year so having two quarterbacks they can trust will be key.
